Girls In Science Camp-In 2003!

Fall is just around the corner and so is Girls In Science, our annual program with the Science Museum of Virginia.  For our members not familiar with this event, Girls In Science is funded through an endowment and generous grants from DuPont and is an overnight adventure for 150 middle school girls and their chaperones.  The program changes each year, but all are designed to promote interest in the sciences and engineering.

The event this year will be held Saturday, October 4th through Sunday, October 5th and the theme is “Engineer It” with a focus on structural engineering. The competitions will be bridge-building and an egg-drop contest. As always, we are looking for members and friends who volunteer to be leaders for groups of girls!!  No experience is necessary - just willingness to have fun and interact with these bright young ladies.

Meet Cicely Bulluck

2003 Richmond SWE Scholarship Recipient

Cicely Bullock graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, VA this year.  While in high school she was very active in many extra curricular activities, including membership in Student Council, Keyette Club, National Beta Club and Varsity Cheerleading.  In addition, Cicely participated on her school's varsity softball and volleyball teams.  She is also a musician, playing the piano and clarinet and participating in the schools Marching Viking Band.  Cicely is also quite active outside of school where she spends much of her free time with the Science Museum of Virginia where she volunteers with overnight events and helps students with science experiments.

Cicely doesn't stop there!  She spends many hours with the Girls Scouts and volunteers at the Ashland Convalescent Center. At the end of her Senior year, Cicely graduated as first in her class at Thomas Jefferson, and she plans to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering at North Carolina A&T beginning this fall.  We congratulate Cicely on all of her accomplishments thus far and wish her good luck with all of her future endeavors.°

Text Box: Updates From Our Previous Scholarship Recipients

Latonya Lane
My name is LaTonya Lane and I received the SWE Scholarship my freshmen year at VCU, where I am currently a senior chemical engineering major, mathematics minor. Some of my extracurricular activities include being the president of the National Society of Black Engineers, a member of SWE, and on the executive board of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. among other things. A few of my hobbies are African Caribbean dancing, boxing, eating, cooking, watching cartoons, and any other physical activities.

Amy Ducut
My name is Amy Ducut, I am 19 years old and originally from Highland Springs, VA. I graduated from Highland Springs High School’s Center for Engineering back in June 2001 where I developed an interest in engineering. Currently I am a junior at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA majoring in Materials Science & Engineering with a minor in Math. I love every minute of school and stay involved both academically and socially. At Tech I am a Brother of Alpha Phi Omega National Co-ed Service Fraternity, Member of Circle K International Service Club, and was also involved in the Residential Leadership Community freshman year. I have also been intiated into Kappa Theta Epsilon, the National Co-op Honor Society, and Phi Sigma Theta, National Honor Society. My hobbies/interests include reading, cooking, singing, music, video games, service, and scrapbooking.
In the Fall of 2002, I accepted a co-op position at DuPont’s Spruance Plant in Richmond. This summer I am completing my second term working in product development for construction materials. At DuPont I am able to gain real-world knowledge of the industry by working with a variety of engineers. Working has been a very rewarding experience in terms of professionalism, networking, and engineering hands-on application. I highly recommend this program to young engineering students looking for a challenge and change of pace to the hectic school year.
